Installation of Glider Poles
Wooden poles are erected on each side of the roadway and are typically between 16 to 30 metres tall with a flat stainless-steel landing platform at the top for protection against other predators.
The glider poles also have a wooden crossarm that extends towards the tree canopy onto which the wildlife can jump or glide.

Protection of Local Wildlife
Glider poles are installed to assist small possums such as sugar and squirrel gliders traverse major roads and highways. The animals glide from the tree canopy to the nearest pole, scamper up to the top of the pole and then glide to the adjacent pole, climb up again and then glide to the opposite tree canopy.
Ongoing monitoring shows that these wildlife animals make good use of the crossings, minimising the dangers to them and drivers alike.
